Tunngle Servers
Is everything routed back to Germany?
Of course not. Tunngle is a direct P2P VPN. This means that all connections are direct and, once established, no data goes through our servers.

Then what do the Tunngle servers do?
The Tunngle servers offers the mediation services that allow the direct connection to be established. This means telling computer A how to reach computer B and so on :).

Is any of my data logged?
No. Since all connections are direct and strongly encrypted, there can be no data preservation on our side and your privacy is thus safe.

I live in Antartica. Can I use Tunngle?
Yes if you have an Internet connection and a PC (penguins won't work) you can use Tunngle from everywhere.

Ok but will my ping be necessary big if I live that far from Germany?
No. Your ping is relative to the other peers. So if the other peers are your room mates you ping will be so small that you won't even see it.

Tunngle Configuration - Port Forward

Determining if you have a router
What if I do not know if I have a router?
First of all you should go wherever your Internet is coming from. There might be a box: if so, read the Model ID and the Brand and do a search over the Internet. If you find no box, you can also compare your external IP address with your PC IP address (info can be found a few questions below). If they match then you are NOT using a router.

What if I am NOT using a router?
If you are NOT using a router and you are experiencing troubles, go to Tunngle->System->Options and hit Test. It should say that the port is opened. If the port is not opened, check your system firewalls, do a web search for known problems or try to contact your ISP.

Router port forward
What is a port forward?
A router is like a post office. When you send a letter to someone, it first arrives at the post office and then it is sent to the recipient. Port forwarding means telling the (router) post office where the letter (data) should be sent. This way the router knows that it has to send the incoming Tunngle data right to your pc (and not to another one in the same network).

Do I need a port forward to use Tunngle?
Tunngle works without the need of a port forward on most systems. As long as you can see a reasonable amount of peers in a network you shouldn't worry. If, on the contrary, you can't see all the other guys in the network nick list, you might have to do this.

Is there any advantage if I forward the port even if Tunngle is working fine without?
If you forward the port you max out the possibility to establish connections with others. This means that you will be able to connect to peers that cannot receive inbound connections.

I need to port forward but i do not know how to. What should i do?
First step is to test the automatic port forward: Tunngle->System->Options->Upnp. If this fails, you have to uncheck the Upnp option and do the forward manually following the right guide for your router.

I am getting the UPnP error! What can I do?
Simple go to Tunngle->System->Options and disable UPnP. Then read how to manually port forward below.

Whaaaaa I get an error and I can't get into the options.... What can I do?
Simple click cancel twice on the login screen and Tunngle will open up in offline mode.

What is an IP?
An IP is some sort of ID that identifies your network devices. Your PC has one. Your router has a different one.

How do I find my router IP? What about my PC IP?
You go to Network Connections, right click on the Internet Adapter, select Status and click details. Your PC address is the IPv4 (IP on Xp) Address. Your router address is usually the IPv4 Gateway.

Why, if I port forward, my computer should have a static LAN IP?
The router must know where to forward incoming data. If your LAN IP changes the data won't be forwarded to the right address. It's like sending a letter to a guy that is always changing address.

How do I get a static IP?
It is simple. You go to Network Connections, right click on the Internet Adapter, select Status and click details. Now take a screenshot of the window and save it somewhere on your hard-drive . Now go to Network Connections, right click on the Internet Adapter, select Properties, select Internet Protocol Version 4 and click Properties.
Now look at the previous screenshot and fill in the data exactly as you see it in the screenshot. Click ok and you're done.

How do I configure my router now?
Routers usually have a web interface which you can access by typing the router address in the browser address bar. If it asks for the password check your router manual for it.

Ok what ports should I open?
Tunngle by default uses UDP port 11155. You can change port from Tunngle->System-Options.

How do I create a port forward?
We need to tell to your router that UDP data that arrives on the port 11155 should be forwarded to your PC. So as first step select the protocol UDP and the port 11155. Now you need to type in your PC IP so that the router knows where to send stuff. Guides for various router models can be found here.

I am still lost. Can you help me more?
If you keep in mind what a forward is, you will find that all problems go away. Always remember, your router is a simple animal. You are telling it that incoming UDP traffic on port 11155 (Tunngle traffic) should be sent to your PC. It is simpler than it seems.

What if i use Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing
Read here.

What if i want to use Tunngle from more than one PC in my home network?
In this case you need to create one account for each PC and do a different port forward for each. Be sure you choose different ports. For example you can forward port 11155 to PC A, port 11160 to PC B and so on. You will have to set the port in the Tunngle options too. Do NOT use port 11156!

How can I test if i forwarded correctly?
The right way to do this is via Tunngle->System->Options->Test. PF Checker and other programs won't give the right result since the Tunngle port is reserved for Tunngle.

Do I need other ports to play?
No you don't. When you are running Tunngle, all data goes through the Tunngle port. Tunngle is like a big smart pipe that links different systems. It is like if you plugged a new network card in your PC and this network card was linked with all the other PCs that you see in the network. You can host/join games over the Tunngle adapter as you would do on a normal LAN without any further step.

Tunngle was working before and now it is not anymore! What should i do?
First of all don't panic. If it was working and you didn't change anything, the solution can't really be too hard. As first step try to reboot your PC and your router/modem (power off/wait a little/power on). If, after this, the situation hasn't changed check Tunngle->System->Options->Test. Does it give the same result as before? If not you might want to check the answers above. Another thing you should check is your internet connection. Is it fine? Sure that it's not an ISP problem? What about Tunngle server maintenance? Take a look at the news :). The next step is to check your network related software (firewall/antivirus). Did it receive an update? Is it working normally? Did you install/change the configuration of any other program? If so, you can try reverting changes. You can also try to uninstall, reboot, install, reboot Tunngle :). Another thing you can try is running the troubleshooter. As last step if you think that something wrong has happened on your system you can try to run Microsoft Windows System Restore (use with extreme caution!, try all the other ways before).

Tunngle Operation
I have UAC turned on. Do I need to run Tunngle as administrator?
No. Administrator is needed only for the installation.

The Tunngle adapter says "Network Cable Unplugged". Is this a problem?
No it is normal. The adapter becomes connected only after you login into Tunngle.

I have a different problem. Godzilla is eating all my Plumcakes! My girlfriend is bugging me too! What can I do?
There is no problem without a solution (even girlfriends). You can find it here.

Is there any tool I can use to troubleshoot?
Yes check this Beta Community Tool. You can use the Tunngle Community Connection Test with a friend to check the connectivity.

How can I help you helping me (in addition to avoiding "HEEEEEELP!!!!" in my posts)?
Check here.

That was easy. Now how can I host/join a game?
A) Start Tunngle B) Go to the Network for the game you want to play C) Start the game D) Go to the multiplayer in-game menu E) Select LAN F) Search for LAN Games :). Tutorial here.

What if I can't see/join games?
A) Do you see your mate in the Tunngle network nick list? B) Do you have the same game version? Update the game in the same order with the same updates! C) Every game has its own executable (like game.exe). Have you added it to windows firewall and other firewalls you might have? D) Is the Tunngle adapter on top? E) Have you used the Tunngle Forum Search to find info about the game? F) Have you tried the Tunngle Community Connection Test with a friend?

How do I enable my Tunngle Web Signature?
Read here.

Can I run old IPX Dos games via Tunngle?
You can by using DosBox. More info here.

Tunngle Security
Can someone on the Tunngle networks sneak into or harm my PC?
You can figure your PC like a room. In order for stuff to enter you need to have doors. On a PC these doors are determined by the software you are running (this is why you should always take care of what you install). This applies to any network environment. Tunngle Mini Firewall ensures that the vulnerable Windows ports (all ports under 1024) are sealed to keep your PC is safe.

Is turning off Windows firewall really useful?
No! It isn't. Windows firewall is an useful protection in all network environments and it shouldn't be turned off unless you know what you are doing.
You can allow Tunngle and Games from Control Panel->Allow a Program through Windows Firewall. On Win7/Vista remember to tick both private and public for the game/Tunngle rules. You can be sure that, once properly configured, Windows Firewall will never be a problem.

I am using Windows 7/Vista. What should I choose when I am prompted the first time I run Tunngle? Private or Public network?
Private (house)/Public network(bench) is a feature that works in conjunction with windows firewall. Tunngle works perfectly if you choose the most secure Public Network option (the one with the bench sign). If you choose public all games will need to have the public check box ticked in the firewall rule list.

Do I need to turn off my third party antivirus/firewall in order to use Tunngle?
Of course not! Antivirus and firewalls are there for a reason. In most cases you won't have any problem. If you do, remember that turning off/uninstalling your antivirus/firewall should be done only as the last resort thing and only for a limited testing period. Before you get to that point, add Tunngle.exe and TnglCtrl.exe to the antivirus exceptions and to the firewall rules. Read here for the known issues of the existing security software.

I heard about a DMZ router setting. Should I try that?
This has nothing to do with Tunngle. DMZ (Demilitarized zone) is a router setting that exposes the PC to the Internet without any kind of protection, independently of the software you are running on your PC.
If you enable this, and you don't have a valid software firewall, your PC will be reachable from the outside. This is of course risky and should not be done except for testing purposes.

Tunngle Offer
Alright cool. So is Tunngle really free? Is it going to be free?
You can count on it. Tunngle will always have a free feature packed basic program.

What if I want more? What if I want to support Tunngle?
For the Enthusiast Supporters and the Hardcore Gamers there will be a premium program that will unleash the full power of Tunngle.

Can I see a comparison?
Yes of course. Check http://www.tunngle.net/#features.

Supporting Tunngle
I have a cool suggestion for Tunngle. What should I do?
Tell us! Your suggestions are really important. Much of the Tunngle changelog is determined by your suggestions so don't be shy.

I want to propose a new network! What can I do?
Ask it here.

Wonderful! So do I have more than three wishes?
Just try :).

What can I do to help?
There are many things that you can do to help. You can play games, spread the word, help others, help translating the Tunngle interface, create videos and artwork, give good suggestions etc etc.. In a few words: Play, Support and Have Fun.

This is not enough. I have more questions!
You can find more answers here. If you still have more question the forum is the right place :D.
